Michael Roberson, Death Obituary:
The close-knit community of Minooka is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Michael Roberson, a 20-year-old student-athlete whose life ended tragically in a late-night crash near Dwight along Old Route 66. His passing has left a deep sense of sorrow among family, friends, teammates, and all who knew him, as they try to come to terms with a loss that feels both sudden and overwhelming.
Authorities from the Livingston County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police reported that Michael’s vehicle was discovered early Wednesday morning after a passing driver noticed it submerged in the Mazon River and called for help. Emergency responders, including the Dwight Fire Department and crews from nearby Odell, rushed to the scene, where the situation was tragically confirmed to be fatal.
Investigators believe Michael had been traveling northbound when his vehicle crossed into the opposite lane, left the roadway, and entered a ditch before overturning into the river. While the exact moment of the crash is still unknown, officials believe it likely occurred during the early morning hours as he was making his way back to campus in Springfield.
Michael was a catcher for the Lincoln Land Community College Loggers baseball program, where he was respected not only for his athletic ability but also for his commitment and team spirit. A graduate of Providence Catholic High School, he carried forward a deep passion for baseball that shaped much of his journey. Coaches and teammates remember him as someone who gave his all—both on and off the field—and whose presence brought energy and unity to the team.
To honor his memory, the program has planned a moment of silence before an upcoming game, along with a candlelight vigil at Cass Gymnasium. These gatherings will allow those who loved him to come together, share memories, and support one another through grief.
As investigations continue, Michael Roberson is being remembered not for the tragedy that took him, but for the life he lived—a young man full of promise, dedication, and heart, whose memory will remain deeply cherished.
